In September World Leaders met in New York for the 80th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly. However, the mood among the thousands of delegates was not celebratory but very sober.

The UN is in a deep crisis not only because of the massive funding cuts of the Trump administration and other governments. The UN also has to redefine its role and relevance in the current world characterized by multiple crises. The UN General Secretary launched his reform program called UN80 recommending the merger and sunsetting of many UN specialized agencies to achieve greater efficiencies and making its work more relevant for the key challenges of the future.

The JLI Center for Global Health Diplomacy participated in and facilitated several meetings in the margins of the UNGA focusing on various topics: the digital transformation of health systems, Global Public Investment as a new concept to financing global public benefits, the future of the global health architecture and the financing of health and climate related programs in the most climate vulnerable countries.

GPI has been recognized at this UNGA as one of the most promising concepts to address the current challenges of global development finance and governance. JLI has been a strong supporter of the GPI concept from its inception and is a member of the Global Public Investment Network (GPIN). GPIN hosted several events during UNGA and is engaging more and more governments and international organizations who are supporting this concept.

Martin Clavijo, the Head of the Uruguayan Development Agency, published a very thoughtful opinion piece on GPI and its role in the current discussions on the future of the UN and development copoeration. The JLI Center for Global Health Diplomacy has established very strong relations with the Uruguayan government and Martin Clavijo and is delighted to see his leadership role on this crucial issue.
