“Private corporations are not charities.”, Christoph Benn, Managing Director JLI Center for Global Health Diplomacy
In Episode 61 of the #GlobalHealthMatters podcast, Christoph Benn from the Joep Lange Institute reminds us that if you want to mobilize the private sector, you have to understand what drives it.
Instead of appealing to corporate philanthropy, (RED) appealed to marketing logic. Iconic brands like Apple, Gap and Starbucks weren’t asked for donations, they were offered a value proposition. Consumers could buy products aligned with social impact, and a share of marketing budgets would support AIDS treatment through the Global Fund.
As global health financing gaps widen, this distinction matters more than ever. Sustainable engagement with the private sector depends on incentives, not just goodwill alone.
