The JLI Center for Global Health Diplomacy team recently visited Uruguay to meet with key leaders and better understand the new government’s vision and priorities. Science and Innovation are at the core of President Orsi’s agenda, and his administration is developing ambitious plans to strengthen research and development — particularly in 🔬💊 biotechnology — as a driver of prosperity and a way to enhance national and regional health security.

In our conversations, we were encouraged by the strong interest in expanding Uruguay’s international role and partnerships. We also highlighted GlobalHealth as a strategic area that aligns with the country’s goals and offers opportunities for meaningful engagement and impact — from innovation and health sovereignty to equitable access and solidarity” recaps Christoph Benn.

As part of the visit, Christoph Benn and Rafael Garcia Aceves co-authored an opinion piece with Andrea Vignolo and Andrés Coitiño (etcétera | centro de estudios) on why Uruguay is well-positioned to play a more significant role in global health. They also spoke with la diaria, one of the country’s leading newspapers, about how Uruguay could take on a pioneering role in this space at a time of change and reform.

After such positive trip, the team looks forward to continuing the conversation with government and science leaders we engaged during their visit–and to exploring partnership opportunities that advance shared priorities such as innovation, equitable access, and international solidarity.
