The Dutch healthcare system is one of the best worldwide and unique because of its inclusive access and affordability. In contrast to the quality of our healthcare system stands the adoption of digital innovation within the industry: even though our healthcare system is increasingly linked to the use of data, there has not been a radical transformation in the sector as can be seen in other sectors. Major American and Chinese tech giants are aware of this gap in innovation and invest huge amounts into data technology for healthcare. It’s high time we join the race from Europe. We advocate taking digital matters into our own hands in the Netherlands to ensure our healthcare data remain in the hands of the Dutch citizens and come to the benefit of our own healthcare system. The power of our data can then be utilized for research, prevention, early disease detection, and for the creation of the best possible healthcare.

We plea for the creation of a new institute: The National Healthcare Platform (“Het Nationale Zorgplatform”): a publicly regulated infrastructure that enables both old and new, and both private and public parties, to collectively own our digital and mobile technology and health data. The Netherlands is eminently suited for the adoption of the National Healthcare Platform due to its tradition of innovating public institutions with the means of private parties. With the National Healthcare Platform, we can uphold the solidarity and collectivity which makes our system so strong, transform the system with maximum value creation coming to the benefit of the individual ánd the collective, and export this model to other countries, starting in Europe.
