Asilia’s story provides a vision of what mobile technology can offer to people living with HIV. The global HIV response must provide faster, better and more personalized care to meet the UNAIDS ambitious 90-90-90 targets. Joep Lange Institute is convinced that mobile technology offers an unprecedented opportunity to scale up quality treatment and provide better access to health financing. This opportunity must also be leverages for HIV. This mobile-based, multimedia experience is accessed through WhatsApp. We will send short text, audio and film messages throughout one day.
“With the new technology and mindset that goes with it, we should be asking ourselves: is that an opportunity or a challenge too high for us. When we think change than we must see this as the biggest opportunity that has ever been presented to us,” says Khama Rogo, Head of Health Africa Initiative, IFC / World Bank, during this year’s Afrikadag in Amsterdam.

Joep Lange Institute is convinced mobile technology is the biggest opportunity ever presented to us to grow inclusive health markets. The wide adoption of the mobile phone has made happen what was long thought to be impossible: it has given millions of people in rural settings and urban slums a voice. Nearly everybody is within reach, in sickness and in health, at little to none marginal cost.
Asilia’s Journey demonstrates the potential to change healthcare financing and delivery. This is a 24-hour multimedia story on people’s mobile phones to show how modern technology tools can provide support in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Mobile technology is a powerful tool to fight the spread of HIV and to connect to those living with the virus. By providing innovative and confidential tools, the phone can help people feel less alone, offer smart solutions for finance and adherence while bridging geographical limitations that were otherwise a major barrier to care.
It is a story of hope, inclusion and possibilities. Join her journey.
